Molinaro - some unseemly campaigning in the High Schools

by: vickyperry

Wed Feb 07, 2007 at 14:56:37 PM EST

We Dems in Red Hook are trying to get the word out about Molinaro's unseemly campaigning in the High Schools.

Last week, Feb. 1,  Assemblyman Molinaro was "sent-off" to Albany at a ceremony at the Red Hook High School assembly. We strongly disapprove of this unseemly politicizing of our children's educations.

If we do not stop this today, it will continue all across the district time and time again. Molinaro cannot have carte-blanche to cross the line that separates school from politics.

And if we don't stop it now, it'll make our work this fall just that much harder!!

The issue:
-  Manipulation of the schools -- yes.
-  Staging a fake event with no civic or educational value -- yes.
Captive student audience -- yes.
-  Failure to include non-Republicans made this by definition a partisan and political event -- yes.

Facts about the Red Hook High school ceremony/assembly.
Here are the facts/talking points we can bring to bear on this issue so as to effectively put a stop to this abuse of the schools:

  • Molinaro's first significant act as Assemblyman in Red Hook has been to stage a partisan politically-charged appearance in our high school.

  • For forty minutes, he had a captive audience.  This is unlike a send-off at the Elks of Chamber of Commerce where we can elect to go or not. The school assembly was mandatory unless a student had a pass. Classes were shortened to allow for it at the end of the school day.

  • Taxpayer-supported. Molinaro's office paid for (with our taxes) invitations mailed out to announce this event. The building facilities were of course paid for with our school tax money. The video "roast" was made on school equipment.

  • This was campaigning. The theme was not any particular issue or civic topic, it was Molinaro himself and his career. It was billed as a "send-off ceremony ". Question: If this was about "local boy makes good" then why did the High School never stage a similar recognition of our historic Supervisor and home-town girl who was the first woman Town Supervisor?

  • The event was inititated by Molinaro's camp  - not by the High School.

  •   Dramatic flourishes lifted this event away from the typical event where a politician (like Cahill)  might  visit a school or class to explain an issue. For example, a 5-minute video, edited on school grounds with school equipment  served as a humorous "roast" of Molinaro. Color guard provided visual pomp & ceremony.

  •   The assembly sought to gain future voters for this politician and other Republicans. These kids have fairly "virgin" political sensibilities. Although it was never explicitly stated, when Molinaro tells the students to register and vote while the kids are being treated to a ceremony about "how great he is", a good guess is they will be likely to vote for him. After all, no alternative candidates or alternative party was even visible!

  • The student representative who was also on stage was a student who interned for Molinaro last summer during his campaign against Pat Manning. They staged a mock swearing-in ceremony.

  •   Molinaro took time and recognized Town Board members  Lisa Pullaro and Harold Ramsey seated in the first row, who waved.

  •   Molinaro took time and recognized Dave Cohen, Red Hook Mayor, who waved.

  •   Molinaro also recognized Dave Seymore (appointed to replace Molinaro in the county legislature) seated in the first row; Seymour got up and turned and waved to the rest of the assembly.

  •   No Dem leaders or elected officials were recognized; none present.

  •   Molinaro has also done an assembly at Taconic Hills H.S. in Columbia County.

  • Unpublished, candid student reaction was "What a waste of time" and "this was just a publicity stunt". (as I said - the kids aren't stupid)

thanks for posting this here.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Excellent.... (0.00 / 0)
These guys have been doing this stuff for years...BUT, we're watching now.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Sorry this is a late reply, just saw your post (4.00 / 1)
Go to the next BOE meeting and complain! Bring about a dozen people with you have designated spokes people and call the local media a couple days before you do so they will show up.

Have all your facts straight. Follow up with LTEs.

You can make lots of trouble for the Board over this...they are the right people to be talking to.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

Our report on speaking to the School Board (0.00 / 0)
I am posting a summary of our visit to the school Baord and the local  news coverage.

We visited the monthly meeting tonight and were invited to present brief remarks (max 3 mins. per person and 30 mins total). We did ultimately exceed the 30 mins a bit. Bill Kemble of the Daily Freeman was there taking notes and recording.

Vicky spoke about the High School assembly and that it appeared to be not of primarily educational value but rather of a partisan nature. She noted that other notable achievers in Red Hook - Marirose and Jean Bordewich - had NOT been similarly celebrated. She asked how this event had developed.

Superintendent Finch replied that the event grew out of a "benign" conversation between himself and Marc - the idea being to celebrate local achievement and perseverance. Mr. Finch stated that Molinaro had said they'd already designed an event for Taconic Hills High School and maybe Red Hook should host a similar event?

Next, Jonah spoke about being a resident for so many years and having children go through the school system and how he had never witness anything like this event which had to be characterized as a "political rally". The numerous town Republicans were joined by Corinne Weber - the Republican county chair pictured sitting prominently in the front row. He wondered what this event cost the taxpayers - did anyone have any idea? What education were we getting for our school tax dollar? He felt that it did not make sense to have another event for the "other side" to balance out things. Rather he fervently hoped that we would never see an event like this again. And he congratulated Mr. Finch on his new baby.

Fergus followed, re-iterating the point that this was partisan, the product of the perennial campaigning that is Molinaro's way. He noted that the juxtaposition of the dramatic trappings, the captive audience and the talk of registering to vote was calculated to gain voters for one party. Fergus agreed that having an event for another politician was no answer. The strongest point Fergus hammered home was that the school officials had been "snookered" by a consummate politician.

Robert Latimer, apparently a county sheriff in uniform, spoke next in support of the assembly. He noted others had not been present and that the Supervisor was invited and he was sure of this since he had made sure all the invitations were sent out. (He was apparently Molionaro's chauffeur during the last campaign). He remarked that "Republican" had been mentioned as often as "Democrat" which was never during the event.

Kris spoke next describing how he had come recently to Red Hook partly for the schools. He felt it was unfortunate that a partisan event would happen in the schools and condemned the seemingly increasing partisan-ness of some many areas of our culture. He repeated the claim that "two wrongs don't make a right" and that a follow-up event for another person was not a solution but that this should not happen again.

Susan wondered about the safety of this school assembly. Why had the school designed a mandatory assembly for students that included inviting the whole town and many county officials? Could the school guarantee the students' safety under such circumstances?

Linda spoke about a "send-off" for Molinaro that she gladly attended at Tivoli Town Hall. She remarked that that venue was appropriate for the purpose but felt the school venue was not appropriate .

Jeff spoke briefly since we had run out of time, about his concern for his three children in this school, agreeing with the concerns already expressed and hoping that there would be not repeat events.

I think at this point Superintendent Finch spoke again about how school administration is always a "learning process" and that he felt the remarks tonight would be part of that process.  Board member Frank Knobloch reiterated the sense that this evening's dialogue had indeed given "educational value" to the event in question.

Harry came to speak but arrived too late. A few others were in attendance to support the call for scrutiny. Thanks to all for coming and supporting this expression of concern.

just out of curiosity (0.00 / 0)
I was just wondering.  What would be the purpose of holding a "political rally" two years away from another of Marc's elections, to a bunch of students who either won't be able to vote by then or will be spread across the country attending college and bettering themselves?  Also in case I'm mistaken if I remember correctly, when I was in high school my attention span was the length of a nano-second.  Two years from now when Marc is up for re-election, after these young impressionable kids have had a chance to think for themselves and follow the campaigns, I think the chance that they will even remember this assembly is slim to none.  I think Vicki needs to move on to more important topics and put her defeat at the hands of Marc behind her.  I also think we should give our kids a little more credit and if this was a "political event", I'm sure they saw right through it.  As far as our tax dollars being spent on the assembly, get over it.  It's the school board's job to allocate funds, not ours.  I'm sure we all have our own opinions as to how school dollars are spent, but we don't have the luxury of deciding.

oh by the way (0.00 / 0)
Marirose nor Jean Bordewich ever graduated from Red Hook High School, if they had I would hope they would be honored as well.
