NY-13: Major Shakeup In Harrison Campaign

by: phillip anderson

Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 15:06:27 PM EDT

We've been hearing all morning about a major shakeup within the campaign of Steve Harrison. Laura Sword, Harrison's campaign manager and two other key staffers have apparently left the campaign. We were subsequently able to confirm the departures and have learned that a statement from the Harrison camp is forthcoming.

More when I have it.

Can it be "Major" (0.00 / 0)
If the campaign was "minor"?

disagree (0.00 / 0)
His staffing this year was a tremendous asset and signal he really learned from his last race.  His campaign manager was a big pick up from a successful Staten Island Assembly race.  He hired professional campaign fund raisers almost immediately.  This is a much improved campaign staff and a much more mature campaign.  His campaign had him well positioned against Recchia up until a month ago when the playing field shifted.

Hiram Monserrate

Couldn't he (4.00 / 2)
possibly run for some other office?

Seems to me that Marty Golden isn't being challenged strongly, which is a curious chink in the Democratic game in NY this year.

Agree... (4.00 / 1)
... if he could take the seat back from Golden in November, it would make it almost worth letting the Republicans have it for six years if it meant that anti-gay (and possibly closeted) Vincent Gentile was ousted from the seat.  Plus it would make the parties officially tied in the Senate, and making it that much easier for us to get a more comfortable majority after the returns start coming in from all the other competitive races across the state (including Bruno's own vacant seat, now?).  Plus, I assume Harrison, as so much more progressive than McMahon as he claims to be, would vote affirmatively on a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, and would offset Ruben Diaz's no vote, making passage a possible reality as early as next January.

Wasn't referring to the team (0.00 / 0)
I was referring to the candidacy.

I like Laura Sword.  I just never thought much of Steve's candidacy in terms of viability.  He has fighting geography and perhaps, ideology.

He has every right to run, but he wasn't doing the work (poor fundraising) to beat Fossella in the general election, much less Dominic or Mike in a Democratic primary.

Gatemouth had written a ton about how both Harrison and to a lesser extent Recchia were less-than-ideal candidates.  But now there is a candidate from the Rock, and the GOP is reeling.

I am not one of those who believes he should "get out" because now Democratic chances are better.  It's America, and it's his right.  I also think primaries are good things, and even if not competitive, can serve as vehicles to air issues and dare I say keep pols (and their hacks) honest.

We might actually have some fun with this one.  Could be interesting.
