Jack Davis, who will declare his candidacy for the 26th congressional district seat tomorrow, had this to say at a recent speaking engagement about one of his three issues: Illegal immigration.
There are many things to say about this short two minute clip where Davis outlines his theories about illegal immigration. First, Davis argues that immigrants from Mexico were taught that Americans fought an unjust war against Mexico and are coming here to take over the southwestern border states. He even argues that these states might secede from the United States and start a civil war.
Davis, of course, has it all wrong. Mexicans are not coming here as part of some hostile takeover to take states like Texas, New Mexico and Arizona away from the U.S. and into Mexico's hands. Mexicans are coming here for one reason: They need work. They need money for their families and unless you live in the urban areas of Mexico, you are not guaranteed work. So Mexicans are left with two options: Either stay around Mexico and wait for a job opportunity to come (if they come) or go to the United States where they know farmers need laborers (for example).
Also, Davis argues for the building of a double wall between the U.S. and Mexico. In his own words, Davis said: "I think the building of a double wall along the southern border is the least expensive long-term solution to maintain the heritage of our fathers."
Building a double wall might be the "least expensive" way, but it is also the most stupid. Building a wall or any other sort of barrier does not solve the problem and that problem being the Mexican economy. The reason immigrants from not only Mexico, but throughout Latin America come to the United States is for one reason: Jobs. We have seasonal labor posts, especially here in New York.
In short, Davis thinks that Mexicans are coming here to take over the southwestern United States and secede from the United States. And his way to prevent such a takeover? Build a wall.
Wow. And this is one of the issues that Jack Davis says are important to him. You would think he would come up with a solution to the problem instead of presenting a xenophobic rant on how Mexicans want to takeover the southwestern United States.
