I used the precinct-level election returns for the year 2000 at American University's Federal Elections Project and the year 2000 precinct boundary files from the US Census Bureau. The maps depict results from 2000 Senate race in the 7th district between Balboni and Democrat Jon Brooks. Balboni won that race, 62,934 (54%) - 51,466 (44%). The district's boundaries did not change significantly during redistricting, so what you see here is pretty much what you get on 2/6.

The same map as above, except with village labels:

Democrats do well in New Cassel and Elmont (both have a large Black population), the Great Neck peninsula, Roslyn & Roslyn heights. Republicans run strong in most of the southern part of the district, in most of Manhasset, and around Plandome. Most of the swing precincts in the district lie on a strip running from Port Washington in the north to Garden City in the South, which also happens to be Craig Johnson's county legislative district:

Johnson's legislative district is outlined in dark blue; O'Connell's former Assembly district is in dark red. |
